Chris Hagerty, (b. 1976) is a Portland, Oregon based artist working primarily with painting, video and digital imaging. The exhibitions that he has participated in across the country include those at Eastern New Mexico University, Pratt Institute, Portland State University, SCOPE New York, the International Studio & Curatorial Program in NYC, and the popular New York City “Bushwick Biennial” held in 2009 at the NurtureArt exhibition space. He has also been published in the magazine New American Paintings representing the Northeast region of the United States for the Spring 2010 issue.
The artist creates jarring environmental scenes using psychedelic colors and architectural landscapes that are starkly juxtaposed with found media images like those of the “War on Terror”. One of his primary visual references includes the familiar architecture of the American shopping mall. By providing such intriguing combinations, Hagerty’s work produces a range of symbolism and references that are both contemplative but nebulous for the viewer to freely interpret.
His recent paintings provide a backdrop for meditation on the cultural connection between the American sense of self and common domestic obsessions like consumerism. In making the work, the artist collects visual source material which then goes through a process of digital and analog editing which includes reconstructing, combining and overlapping various reference images. The artist, as a mediator of visual information in this vast age of instantaneity, considers his creative process as an organization, distillation and translation of the visual information to which he is exposed.
By using the painted surface as his preferred medium, the artist satisfies a need to create discrete objects that communicate matters beyond the totality of their material facets. His work traverses a unique exploratory realm of modernity and its technological contributions as well as its influence on current cultural phenomena and aesthetics.
