Gallery Rene Mele and Dumont Financial LLC are proud to present the exhibition
Boys of Summer
Featuring the works of
Karen Heagle, Matthew James Stone and Timothy Hutchings
This vivid exhibition of paintings and sculptures brings together the work of three American contemporary artists who examine the enduring artistic practice of working within the bounds of multimedia, color and form.
Karen Heagle’s artworks are comprised of bold colorful mixtures and experiments of collaging elements of paper and leafing. Her artworks often reflect autobiographical symbolism thematically focused on memento-mori, feminism, sexuality and queer identity. Karen Heagle has had solo exhibitions at Churner and Churner Gallery and I-20 Gallery in New York City. Her works have been featured in “Paper” at the Saatchi Gallery in London and in 2012 she participated in “Art on Paper” at the Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, NC. Heagle has also been included in exhibitions at Invisible Exports and Sargent’s Daughter’s Gallery. Her artwork is part of the Judith Rothschild Collection of Contemporary Drawings at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City, as well as in collections such as La Colección Jumex in Mexico City and DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Art in Athens, Greece. She is also on the board of the Fire Island Artist Residency in Cherry Grove Fire Island. Karen Heagle holds a MFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and a BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Menomonie, Wisconsin. The artist lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
Timothy Hutchings creates through a process of layering acrylic paint shadows on panel, using stencils and airbrush. The faux-Minimalist paintings work within a lexicon of 1970s van graphics, 8 bit video games and science fiction utopianism while creating an illusion of machine-like precision upon a surface never actually touched by the artist’s hand. However, upon further examination, these paintings reveal innumerable imperfections and acts of chance which betray the viewer’s initial reading of the surfboard slickness resulting from the high gloss resin finish. Timothy Hutchings has had solo exhibitions at Gallery Rene Mele and I-20 Gallery both in New York. He has been included in exhibitions at Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spain, P.S.1 MoMA Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City, New York, Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, Patio Herreriano, Valladolid, Spain, The Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, Austria and The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art, Taichung, Taiwan among others. Timothy Hutchings graduated with a MFA in Sculpture from Yale University School of Art, 1998 and a BFA in Video Art from Kansas City Art Institute, 1996. Timothy Hutchings lives and works in Portland, Oregon.
Matthew James Stone explores “imperfection” and “life force in materiality” he builds tension between the patterns of the natural world and manmade material and process. Inspired by the embodiment of meaning in material found in nature, Stone creates symbols and abstraction investigating the human condition from a cosmic perspective. The sculptures by Stone resemble small monuments to a world that is behind or in-between moments; a quantum particle, the jeweled feather of a bird, or a memory that may have been a dream. Compelled by the ancient and the futuristic, Stones artifacts are mysterious and compelling, his works unlike the ancient object resonate with a time yet to be, that one day will hold a place in history. Matthew James Stone graduated with a bachelors degree in Fine Art and Sculpture from the Massachusetts College of Art in 2003 and in 201o he finished a Masters of Fine Art from the School of the Visual Arts in Manhattan, New York. He has completed two solo shows in New York at the Hole and in Brooklyn at Like the Spice Gallery as well as numerous group shows around the country. Matthew James Stone lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
